What it is
Sealing is the step after cleaning. A sealer soaks into concrete, pavers or stone, or forms a thin coat on top, so water, oil and dirt sit on the surface longer instead of soaking straight in.
It makes the next cleaning easier and keeps a fresh wash looking good longer. Some sealers also deepen the color of stone and pavers.

How it's done
Clean it first
Sealer locks in whatever is underneath, so the surface is fully cleaned before anything goes on.
Let it dry
Sealer needs a dry surface to bond, so it goes on after the cleaning has dried out.
Apply the right sealer
Penetrating or coating, natural or wet look: the sealer is matched to the surface and how it is used.
Let it cure
Keep feet, cars and sprinklers off it for the time the sealer needs to cure.

Questions
Why seal after washing?
A sealed surface soaks up less water, oil and dirt, so stains have a harder time setting in and the next cleaning is easier.
Will a sealer make my pool deck slippery?
Some coating sealers can be slick when wet. Around pools a texture additive can be mixed in, or a penetrating sealer used. Ask which suits your deck.
Can a new driveway be sealed right away?
No. Fresh concrete needs time to cure before it is sealed. Follow the builder's advice and the sealer maker's instructions on timing.
How soon can I walk or drive on it?
It depends on the sealer and the weather. You'll be told how long to keep off it before you need to plan around it.
